U21 international
AC Milan will continue to rely on the services of homegrown Matteo Gabbia. The contract with the 22-year-old central defender, which originally ran until 2024, was extended to 2026 on Thursday evening, as the Rossoneri announced.
Gabbia made the breakthrough in the Milan squad in the first half of 2020/21 and subsequently also became Italy’s U21 international. After signing Fikayo Tomori (24), he received less and less playing time, so far in 2021/22 there are only six games in Serie A and one in the Coppa Italia.
A loan was therefore in the room in January, UC Sampdoria was considered an interested party. However, Milan kept Gabbia in view of the lack of signing of another central defender, among others there was interest in Sven Botman (22). Tomori will be out until mid-February with a meniscus injury, defender Simon Kjaer (32) will be out until the end of the season due to a cruciate ligament tear. Captain Alessio Romagnoli (27) has also been prone to injury in recent years.
