Renewal of the CGPJ: Is there a ‘deep’ PP?

When politics fails to explain the inexplicable, conspiracy theories appear. The concept of ‘deep state’ is used by many analysts to explain the movements of high state officials to safeguard their interests above the conjunctures and partisan miseries. Possibly there is some truth to that theory. But in no case can what they call the ‘deep state’ be something organized because it would be subject to immediate legal action for conspiracy to commit sedition. Although it is evident that, individually, certain officials move when they see themselves in danger.

The easy thing today is to say that this deep state or even a ‘deep PP’ has made Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s bed and has prevented him from agreeing with Pedro Sánchez the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) as a preliminary step to renew the Constitutional Court (TC). Certainly, in the epidermis, From Tuesday to Thursday, Feijóo has changed his opinion for an issue, the reform of the crime of sedition, which he had said did not interfere in the negotiation on the government of the judges. But we don’t know what happened underground. Did the PP put on the table a candidate that the PSOE did not want to accept? Was Minister Montero wrong on Thursday morning when she announced in the Congress rostrum that the Government was going to present a reform of this crime to homologate it to the EU? Or, certainly, the soft Feijóo gave in to the front pages of the newspapers and the ultra news that predicted the seven plagues of the West if he agreed in this context?

Be that as it may, some certainties exist. The PP maintains an influence in the judiciary that does not correspond to its current representativeness. The PSOE always agrees to renew the constitutional bodies when it is in opposition, while the PP extends the terms until it has a majority again. The conservative sector of the judges wants to continue protecting the laws that are approved, either directly in Parliament, through sentences, especially the TC, or in the debate of public opinion. Although there is also the possibility that, through this ‘deep PP’, Feijóo will be overwhelmed by those who think of Bárcenas first than the party leader.
