It’s the end of October and the clocks go to winter time, but the sun stays in summer time for a while. Today and tomorrow it will be exceptionally warm for the time of year: in Limburg it can even reach 25 degrees. “Records will be shattered.”
If we now had the long summer days, we would hit 35 degrees in no time, says Wouter van Bernebeek of Weather Plaza. ,,But the days are short, the sun is only just as high, so it will only be well warmed up between 2 pm and 4 pm and the temperature will remain at 20 degrees at the sea to 25 degrees locally in Limburg. Exceptionally warm for the time of year.”
Van Bernebeek expects that heat records will probably be broken in the coming days. They are not very sharp. ,,It seems only a formality that they are going to die. Today, for example, the current heat record is only 19.5 degrees from the year 2005. The temperature forecast for De Bilt at the moment is about 22.5 degrees, which would mean a significant improvement of the record. For tomorrow the record also comes from 2005 and stands at 19.7 degrees. With another expectation around 22.5 degrees, that record will most likely also be smashed.”
It will be sunny, with some clouds here and there. There may be a splash of rain in the coastal provinces, but it will remain dry in most places.

spanish plume
That exceptional warmth comes to our country with a strong southerly wind from France and Spain, something the meteorologist calls the ‘Spanish plume’. It’s a big bubble of warm, relatively dry air – originally from North Africa – blown into Europe from Spain. “Once this air has arrived at us, it is of course slightly cooled down, but still downright warm.” According to Van Bernebeek, it is a coincidence that it is so warm in October. “But this is special. Normally it is warm for one or two days in this month, now it has been remarkably warm all week. I think we’re going to see this more often in the coming decades, maybe even continuing into November.”
That is not the case now: at the start of November Tuesday the temperature drops, but that is gradually. “It certainly isn’t really autumn yet. Every day 1 or 2 degrees are reduced, so that by the end of the week we will be at about 14 degrees. And that’s still soft.”
