The Lord † Petra Haden: “Devotional” (Review & Stream)

The daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Haden has been a singer and violinist for quite some time. In 2005 she released an a cappella version of the complete “The Who Sell Out” album, in March she sang the John Zorn compositions “Songs For Petra” in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. There’s always a surprise in there, especially since The Lord is backed by guitarist and Sunn O))) co-founder Greg Anderson.

Seductive and hypnotic

“Devotional” isn’t their first collaboration, and the combination of classical Indian music and a heaviness that only roars from tube amplifiers sounds correspondingly sovereign. On “The End Of Absence” this transcendental stoner sound takes on a massive, sky-ripping quality, alluring and hypnotic.
