The terrorist group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on a Shia shrine in southern Iran’s Shiraz, which killed at least 15 people, according to Iranian state news agency IRNA.
IS reported on Telegram that even “at least 20 Shias were killed” and dozens of others were injured.
The attackers were in a car and shot at pilgrims and staff at the entrance to Shah Cheragh’s shrine, the news agency quoted witnesses as saying. Police have arrested two of the three attackers and are still looking for the third.
Previously, IRNA described the armed attackers as “takfiri terrorists,” a label officials in predominantly Shia Iran use to refer to Sunni groups. IS describes itself as a Sunni group.
