Bayer Leverkusen’s Rolfes is delighted with Wirtz’s return, but slows down

Is on Flick’s World Cup list

Bayer Leverkusen’s head of sport Simon Rolfes is looking forward to the return of young star Florian Wirtz to a competitive game, but does not expect a lightning comeback. “Everyone can look forward to it, but of course it will take a while,” said Rolfes on Tuesday on Leverkusen’s trip to the Champions League game at Atlético Madrid (9 p.m.).

The day before, Wirtz had completed part of the team training for the first time after a serious cruciate ligament injury. “That was a giant step for him – also in terms of the feeling that he realizes that he is slowly getting closer to the real life of football,” said Rolfes.

Wirtz was seriously injured in the Bundesliga game between Leverkusen and 1. FC Köln in March. It remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old national player will be fit and in shape in time for the World Cup in Qatar in November and December. At least the youngster is on the provisional World Cup list reported to FIFA by national coach Hansi Flick. The list published by “Bild” includes a total of 44 names – Flick will announce his final squad on November 10th.
