Bruges invests 2.5 million euros in dredging works and bank reinforcement

The works are necessary because there is a silt layer in the Reien and because the bank reinforcement at various locations is no longer so strong.

“These dredging works are necessary to maintain good water quality in Bruges’ waters and the reinforcement must also be restored to protect the banks against leaching. The canals are one of the places that make Bruges so picturesque. So we have to take good care of it.” says Alderman of Public Domain, Mercedes Van Volcem. “We plan to carry out some of the works during the winter of 2022.”

Among other things, dredging will take place in the pond in the Koningin Astridpark, at Bakkersrei, Speelmansrei and ‘t Stil Ende. The banks also need to be strengthened in those three last places. Bruges is also repairing quay walls, jetties and bridgeheads.
