Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 cleared the hurdle against VfB Lübeck in the 2nd round of the cup and is in the round of 16. The leader of the Regionalliga Nord was able to keep the game open until just before the break.
VfB Lübeck had the first chance. After a short free kick, Felix Drinkuth took aim in the 10th minute from around 25 meters. But the Mainz keeper Finn Dahmen was able to steer the tight flapping ball over the crossbar.
Guided by hack
Six minutes (16th) later, the 05ers cheered. After a corner, Karim Onisowo headed the ball into the five-meter area – Alexander Hack maneuvered the ball from there with his head and foot over the line.
From then on, Mainz decided the game and could have increased through Marcus Ingvartsen in the 30th minute. But the leader of the Regionalliga Nord held out and was able to keep the game open for a long time. But in the 42nd minute Ingvartsen scored to make it 2-0 (43rd). After a long ball from his own half, the Dane ran freely towards Florian Kirsche’s goal, the keeper storms out of the penalty area, Niklas Kastenhöfer hits Ingvartsen on the chest while trying to clear – and he can push the rebound into the empty goal.
Delayed restart
The second half then started with some delay, apparently because supporters of VfB Lübeck had ignited numerous Bengalos and firecrackers. Referee Robin Braun sent the two teams back to the dressing room.
Mainz then had their first big chance on the pitch in the 57th minute, but Leandro Barreiro was saved by Kirsche from the edge of the penalty area. A few minutes later, Lübeck’s captain almost shot into his own goal, but Lübeck’s goalkeeper was there again. The strong cherry prevented the Bundesliga club’s third goal for a long time. In the 88th minute, however, Barkok Joker completed a counterattack with the 3:0.
