Borussia Dortmund’s sports director Michael Zorc has again emphatically warned that the Bundesliga could become less important in an international comparison due to the severe corona restrictions.
“We have these restrictions, we are currently living without any real spectator income,” Zorc told the “kicker”: “The stadiums are significantly fuller abroad, which creates economic disadvantages for the German clubs.”
If BVB can earn “up to four million euros less per home game”, “that adds up – especially since we have already had two financial years that were heavily influenced by the corona pandemic.”
Zorc fears that the Bundesliga could lose touch. “I already had the impression that England and Spain were a bit ahead of the game in European competitions, only Bayern Munich could compete economically,” said the 59-year-old.

A look at the current knockout phase of the Champions League shows that Zorc’s perception could be correct. Only Bayern Munich is represented there from the Bundesliga. Three teams from Spain have made it into the round of 16, along with four clubs from the English Premier League.
German clubs, on the other hand, have “always defined themselves by taking a slightly different path that is characterized by economic solidity,” said Zorc: “But now the pandemic is hitting the office. Most clubs are currently not doing well economically, that’s a fact. “
In Germany, according to the latest decision from Wednesday, up to 10,000 spectators are allowed into the stadium at the weekend. In England, on the other hand, the arenas are full, in Spain the stadiums can be filled to 75 percent.
