Review: Betterov :: Olympia

Betterov is alienated by his “strange life” and “the people” who surround him. It is a feeling of being outside, of not belonging, that occupies the 28-year-old singer and actor on his debut album OLYMPIA, which is musically situated between indie rock and post-punk.

A state of mind probably familiar to most of us, but few as pronounced as Betterov, who doesn’t seem even familiar with himself: “I see myself in pictures, but I can’t remember.” From this one Starting with feelings, Betterov sings about drunkenly sentimental taxi rides home, struggling with anonymous life in the metropolis and – of course – the longing for great love.

A great, emotionally stirring joy

Musical trademark: Angry, melancholic guitar riffs placed in prominent places, which help Betterov’s multi-faceted, rough and occasionally pleasantly brittle voice to achieve the greatest emotional intensity. This succeeds par excellence on the breakup song “Urlaub am Abgrund”, which begins slowly at first, but steadily increases over five minutes until the ego frees itself from its failed love relationship in the greatest ecstasy.

On the other hand, the album’s OLYMPIA motif, which is picked up by an opening ceremony intro and an award ceremony outro, doesn’t really want to catch on, but doesn’t play a role on most of the songs. Nonetheless, it remains a great, emotionally stirring joy to listen to Betterov’s world-weariness.
