Guests an hour to ten: FC St. Pauli wins the city derby against HSV

Ironically, in the Hamburg city duel in the second Bundesliga against HSV, FC St. Pauli ended its negative series. After seven games without a win, the Kiezkicker defeated the league leaders 3-0 (0-0) at home on Friday evening. For HSV it was the third defeat of the season.

The team of coach Timo Schultz benefited from a red card against HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau, who had to leave the field after an emergency brake. Coach Tim Walter’s guest team also had more possession in the 60-minute manpower, but hardly created any chances.

St. Pauli did better: Eric Smith headed in from a corner in the 61st minute. In the final phase Marcel Hartel made everything clear after a nice combination (74th) and David Otto with a header (89th). HSV had yet to concede three goals this season.

“It was the game we needed. We got off to a good start with a red card. We fought for it and we got our reward.”
— St. Paulis Eric Smith

St. Pauli’s captain Jackson Irvine cheered: “We implemented our plan and put on a show for the fans. We made some tactical changes and performed really well.” The feelings of the guests were completely different. “It hurts to lose a game like that,” said HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes. “But we won’t let that get us down. I’m really sorry for the fans, but together we’ll come back stronger.”

The hosts gained air in the lower half of the table with the threesome. Meanwhile, HSV is threatened with losing the lead in the table: Both Darmstadt 98 (on Saturday at Karlsruher SC) and SC Paderborn (Sunday against SV Sandhausen) can pass.

Police operation causes excitement, St. Pauli protests

There was a lot of excitement in Hamburg even before kick-off. As in previous years, the police had relied on strict fan separation. However, a good 150 masked St. Pauli supporters tried to get to the HSV fans. This prevented the police, who had previously accompanied a march of around 3,000 HSV fans to the stadium. However, the police operation caused a lot of discussion after a video was uploaded to Twitter. In it: the police hit a fan lying on the ground – in the side and in the direction of the head. FC St. Pauli reacted quickly – also on Twitter – asking about proportionality and demanding clarification.

To the post on Twitter

The police said that “parts of this group were taken into custody”. “Video circulating on the internet shows one such detention, in which a police officer uses coercion in the form of physical violence,” police tweeted.

And further: “Why coercion had to be used in this case is not clear at the moment. However, this is usually the case when a person blocks police measures, for example.” It remains to be checked whether proportionality has been observed.

Police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün defended the operation after the final whistle: “It was a targeted action. We intervened and thus prevented the HSV fans from being massively attacked. These videos never look nice. But that’s not a colleague for fun.”

HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes keeps the zero – Schonlau sees red

Were the players aware of what was happening in front of the stadium? In any case, the hosts started unimpressed. Less than a minute was played when St. Pauli’s Irvine headed just over after a corner. Ludovit Reis had HSV’s best chance in the early stages after a courageous solo through the Kiezkicker’s defence. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj was able to parry the Dutchman’s shot, but he was lucky that the rebound was not followed by a follow-up shot (11′).

Five minutes later it should have been 1-0 for St. Pauli. After the best combination up to that point, Etienne Amenyido found a free shot in front of the HSV goal, but failed with his completely unplaced shot by Daniel Heuer Fernandes.

The 29-year-old also had to clear a little later after a corner in dire need. St. Pauli defended with a five-man chain, but switched quickly again and again. The guests, on the other hand, didn’t know what to do with their ball possession. The mood at the Millerntor was heated – in the stands and also on the square. Referee Deniz Aytekin had a lot to do, but it was so loud in the stadium that the players didn’t hear his whistles several times.

Not so in the 28th minute – all eyes were on the referee. After a long shot from Vasilj, Amenyido was significantly faster than the HSV defenders. Schonlau gave his opponent a slight push from behind, the St. Paulianer fell – and Aytekin immediately showed red. Emergency brake.

St. Pauli makes it clear at the end

However, the guests didn’t show that they were outnumbered and remained true to their possession football. St. Pauli failed to catch up in this phase. The Schultz-Elf did not find the action, but continued to react. And in terms of football, the performance of the hosts was rather modest most of the time. They still had the better chances: Igor Matanovic failed to hit the post in the 44th minute.

“We’re really disappointed and frustrated. We didn’t deliver in the most important game of the season so far, and that hurts.”
— HSV player Jonas Meffert

So the game was on a knife’s edge after the break. The HSV put pinpricks – and demanded a penalty in the 55th minute. Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer went down in front of goal after contact with Jakov Medic. “It was a similar situation to the red card against us. These 50:50 scenes didn’t turn out in our favor today,” said HSV coach Walter. The difference to the Schonlau scene: Königsdörffer had no chance of getting the ball when it fell.

The St. Paulians were now more dominant, but initially lacked accuracy in front of goal. But that changed in the 61st minute. Then Smith rose in the HSV penalty area at a corner and heads. The ball landed in the corner with centimeter precision – 1:0 for the home side.

Now HSV had to be outnumbered. And as with the dismissal, Walter’s players were not shocked. But this time St. Pauli followed suit. Irvine entered the penalty area from the right and crossed in front of the goal. Hartel was free and pushed in to make it 2-0 (75′). And in the final minutes it became clear: Heuer Fernandes and substitute captain Jonas Meffert looked bad on a cross, Otto headed in to the final score (89′).
