Review: Brian Eno :: Foreverandevernomore

Brian Eno was one of the first to chastise himself in the wake of the 2016 Brexit vote for having spent more time on clever apps than on political campaigning for the UK to stay in the EU. Something like that shouldn’t happen to him again! Therefore, the sound researcher is now releasing an album with which he warns of climate collapse. What’s special: he’s singing himself again, the first time since the album ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH (2005).

His vocal range on this new record is remarkable: Eno is reminiscent of Brendan Perry, lead singer and Baron of Darkness in Dead Can Dance. Tracks like “Who Gives A Thought” or “There Were Bells” seem correspondingly dark and a little disillusioned. That’s not how a fighter sounds, but a resigned one. Which doesn’t mean that the album is lost.

Especially towards the end, FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE benefits from female guest voices, Brian’s daughter Darla Eno can be heard on the identity search “I’m Hardly Me”, Irish singer Clodagh Simonds takes on the main vocals on the neoclassical album highlight “These Small Noises”. This music will not succeed in saving the climate. To calm the soul, however, very well.
