The two blocks E and F of the Jänschwalde brown coal plant in Lusatia are to be put back into operation. The Brandenburg State Environment Agency granted the energy company Leag the corresponding exemption on Friday.
The Jänschwalde power plant has a total of six blocks, but E/F have been taken off the grid. The return of the two blocks should help save gas in the coming months. The exemption is limited until June 30, 2023.
Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (60, SPD) told RBB: “It’s not nice, it will definitely be a setback for climate protection, but we will need it for the next few months.”
The two 500-megawatt blocks were on standby. They no longer meet current environmental standards and were originally intended to be taken out of service. Therefore, the driver needed a special permit to restart.
According to the company, a timely upgrade could not be implemented quickly enough.
Leag also announced that it would build the largest German center for renewable energies in Lusatia. Photovoltaic and wind turbines are to generate green electricity on the former opencast mining areas.
