What happened to the embalmed corpse of Evita Perón, the Argentine icon adored by millions of followers? In the seven-part drama series Santa Evita the bizarre events after her death are widely reported in a fictional reconstruction that defies the imagination.
At one point, for example, there are four corpses of the first lady in circulation, three of which are counterfeit. This is a mess, because the new colonel regime of Argentina does not want the grave of Evita to become a place of pilgrimage for her followers, mainly from the people. For years, the real corpse went missing.
Santa Evita, co-produced by the Mexican Salma Hayek, who does not play a part, is told as a thriller in which a journalist wants to solve the mystery surrounding the remains of Evita. His life is in constant danger.
The series features many incredible twists and turns that reveal just how powerful Evita was in her land and how fearful her opponents were of her influence. In one scene, hours after her death at the age of 33, one of the soldiers shouts “Long live cancer” to show how her death came in handy in the booth of her opponents.
Looking back, the rise of Evita, as the wife of President Juan Peron, is explained. That’s not the best part of Santa Evita. The corpse mystery is the real fulcrum of this intriguing series.
