Former White Lion Ron de Roode passed away (57): “Rapidly and had a fantastic kick”

Former Telstar player Ron de Roode passed away at the age of 57 after a short illness. The attacker with the characteristic blond mat and the flax mustache played for the White Lions from 1990 to 1995. In the nineties he played together with the current OFC coach Pieter Mulders. “He was lightning fast and had a fantastic kick.”

Ron de Roode was a popular player and can provide very nice statistics from his time at Telstar. He played in Velsen-Zuid from 1990 to 1995. He scored 41 goals in 98 games. In 1995, testicular cancer was found at De Roode and he stopped playing professional football. In addition to Telstar, he also played for FC Den Haag and Willem II. After his career he trained several amateur clubs.

Underrated player

Pieter Mulders played several seasons at Telstar in the 1990s with De Roode. The two former White Lions had a good relationship with each other and Mulders speaks highly of the wing attacker.

“I think his qualities are quite underestimated. If I had the ball, I would shoot it into the corner without looking. Ronny went after it anyway. That gave Telstar a lot of goals.”
