Joost Eerdmans was reprimanded by the hostess herself in Eva Jinek’s talk show last night. She thought he was juggling numbers. “Hold on, this is not multi-interpretable.”
Eva Jinek had two political opposites at her talk show table yesterday to discuss the asylum crisis in our country: Joost Eerdmans of the right-wing JA21 and Jesse Klaver of the left-wing GroenLinks. “We have set up a system through which people come to Ter Apel from far and wide,” complained Joost.
Three percent
According to Joost, there are far too many safelanders among them. “The point is that for ten percent it also concerns people from Morocco, Tunisia, who should not be there at all. They also cause the biggest problems.”
Jesse then firmly: “Three percent.”
Eva also: “Three percent.”
Joost: “No, it’s more.”
Jesse: “No, it’s three percent. No sorry. No no no. The facts matter.”
Joost: “It’s more, it’s more.”
Eva corrects
Eva then severely rebukes her guest Joost. “Wait a second. But just for a second: we’re not going to discuss statistics, are we? I mean, three percent is just three percent, right? That’s not multi-interpretable, is it?”
Joost: “Well, I checked it today, ten percent, but it will differ per year what comes in.”
At one point Eva gets a little frustrated. “May I say something? It’s no surprise that you think otherwise. I speak on behalf of all viewers who are just watching and all citizens in the country: you see a politics and parties that are deeply entrenched in their own political trenches.”
Approach
Solutions must be found, says Eva. “There is no rapprochement, of creative ideas, of someone who seems willing to give up something. I understand that you represent your supporters and that you have to bring and get something for them, but if you look at this from a distance, it doesn’t seem like you come to a solution at all.”
Joost surprised: “Yes, but you invite two opposites, that’s fine.”
Eva: “Of course, because they also exist in society, but those opposites have to solve it, right?”
‘I’m coming from retreat’
Eva comes out of her ultra-long summer vacation quite frustrated due to the deadlock at the table. “Somewhere I had a totally snooty illusion that I would come back from a talk show retreat and that solutions would come here. Tiny minuscule millimeters of rapprochement. Loose.”
With a sense of drama: “It’s a big problem, I know, but I just didn’t want to end a conversation with: ‘We will continue to follow it’, or: ‘We agree to disagree.’ But there’s no other way, because I have to close this. It’s no different, but thank you anyway for talking about this. Thank you.”
