FC Volendam has won its first victory of the season. In a lively match, the team of trainer Wim Jonk won 1-0 against FC Twente. “A wonderful release. This was an enormous team effort”, said a satisfied Jonk afterwards.

Rejected

After more than fifteen minutes of play, FC Volendam entered the game. The first chance was for Derry John Murkin. He shot into the short corner, but keeper Unnerstall taps the ball over the back line. Moments later, it was Robert Mühren who hit the bar, on a pass from Henk Veerman. Brian Plat appeared to score in the 21st minute, but his goal was disallowed due to an offside by Veerman who provided the assist.

Towards halftime another strong period started for FC Twente. Henk Veerman prevented a goal by getting the ball off the line and Stankovic kept an excellent goal after a shot by Tzolis.

Back and forth

The game continued to go both ways in the second half. Henk Veerman shot into the side net, but the team from Overijssel also regularly became dangerous. Keeper Stankovic managed to keep FC Twente from scoring several times.

Substitute Walid Ould-Chikh had perhaps the biggest chance of the match. Face to face with keeper Unnerstall, the Twente keeper was the strongest. A few minutes later it was Mühren with a great chance, but from close range Unnerstall managed to tap the ball out of the goal with a feline save.

In the 82nd minute, the 1-0 came on the scoreboard. Lequincio Zeefuik, who came in for Robert Mühren, put it to his name. Zeefuik managed to get the ball in after excellent preparatory work by Murkin and Darryl van Mieghem. After a draw against FC Groningen (2-2) and a loss against NEC (1-4), FC Volendam booked its first victory of the season.

“What a relief. We trained well last week and talked a lot with each other. We translated that to the field,” said defender Derry John Murkin.
