Valtteri Bottas went to Sunday’s Belgian GP with the highest expectations. His starting square improved by one notch on race day, when Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri was moved from the grid to the pit gate.
Bottas celebrated his birthday on Sunday, but unfortunately, this time the celebration was completely left to the side of the team’s PR facilities.
The Finn’s race was already over in the first round, when he dodged the spinning Williams on the gravel. Alfa Romeo buried itself too deep in it, and Bottas was no longer able to continue his race.
– It was a bit bad weather. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had to dodge pretty quickly when (Nicholas) Latif spin in front, Bottas explained to Viaplay.
– That’s why I went out. There were two options: hit him or this, which happened. There was nothing that could be done about it.
Bottas was clearly upset as he firmly believed he could have added to his points tally. Alfa Romeo’s season has turned into a minor victory, because the Finn has not reached the points in five consecutive races.
The last time Bottas made it to the top ten was in Canada a week before Midsummer.
– I believed that we would have fought on points. It is difficult to predict how it would have gone.
