The European champions lost 8:21, 6:21 to the Japanese Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino in Tokyo. Third place is not played.
First podium in 11 years
The top German pairing from Wipperfeld and Bischmisheim had won the first German mixed medal at world championships by beating seventh in the world rankings Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet from Hong Kong on Friday.
For the German Badminton Association (DBV), which has so far only been able to celebrate World Championship medals in women’s singles, it is the first podium finish in eleven years.
