Review: Oehl :: No flowers

First of all, the hard fact: the duo OEHL has split up. The Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Hjörtur Hjörleifsson was still involved in laying the foundation for those pieces that KEINE BLUMEN bundle. But it was the Viennese musician Ariel Oehl who brought it to maturity (with various producers). However, this does not result in a really novel coloring: like the previous releases, almost the entire record offers danceable electro-pop that is reminiscent of Metronomy and Tame Impala.

Unfortunately, Oehl’s slurred voice is all too often smothered by the summery synths and omnipresent bass runs – and yet the lyrics (conceal) hide depth: the title and closing song tells the story of a dying woman who wished her loved ones to give her the flowers but please save for the burial. In “Until One Weeps” the root of the male gender archetype is explored; “Blau” deals with the subject of addiction and “Further going” deals with the most important of all subjects ever sung about – heartache. Dear readers, I recommend listening with pricked ears.
