Organic dairy farmers should be spared the nitrogen approach and autumn colors during the summer heat. That and much more in this week’s Drenthe news.

But we start the weekly overview with the end of the Second World War. This was discussed in Borger on Monday. The victims of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies were also commemorated. Prior to that commemoration, there was still a lot to do about the inverted flags in Drenthe, in protest against the government’s nitrogen policy. The fact that the Dutch flag is still hanging upside down in many places during the commemoration is against the sore leg of veterans.

On Tuesday, the organic dairy farmers were in the news. Minister Van der Wal for Nature and Nitrogen is investigating whether this group can be spared in the nitrogen approach. Organic farmers are happy with that, as long as other farmers don’t become the victims.

On Wednesday, the trade association of retailers called on entrepreneurs to keep their doors closed if they have the air conditioning on. They want that to save energy. More and more shopkeepers in Emmen are responding to this, but not yet in Meppel…

Talk about heat. It is not yet autumn, but many trees and shrubs are turning brown again. They suffer from the extreme heat and prolonged drought. In the worst case, this can lead to branch breakage. That’s how things went wrong in Zuidlaren last Thursday.

And in Nijeveen the reversed flags are back. They were removed at the request of the municipality of Meppel to commemorate the end of the Second World War. But now the inverted tricolor is there again. “The reason for our protest has not changed. We have the feeling that we are not being listened to in The Hague. That is why we hang them again,” says one of the initiators.
