Nordic skiing: Combined Riiber wins in Seefeld

Seefeld (dpa) – The outstanding Nordic combined athlete Jarl Magnus Riiber won the first competition in the prestigious triple in Seefeld. The 24-year-old Norwegian prevailed in Austria ahead of Vinzenz Geiger from Oberstdorf and Johannes Lamparter from Austria.

Riiber, who recently rested due to a back injury, underlined his position as the top favorite for the Winter Olympics.

The German athletes also want to fight for the medals there. In Terence Weber, who finished fourth, Eric Frenzel in sixth place and Johannes Rydzek in eighth place, three other athletes from the team of national coach Hermann Weinbuch made it into the top ten.

The World Cup in Tyrol was also affected by the strong wind. The ski jumping that was actually planned for lunchtime could not take place. For the starting order of the 7.5 kilometer long cross-country ski race, the provisional round of the previous day was used. Riiber had won this easily. He started the race with a lead of 57 seconds and won it 25.4 seconds ahead of second-placed Geiger. “He’s just an outstanding combiner, almost perfect. That’s what you have to measure yourself against,” said Geiger on ZDF.
