In Wapserveen, two cows may have been attacked by a wolf last night. It is rare for a wolf to graze an adult cow.
Both cows were attacked in Roel Gorte’s yard. He and his wife were not on the farm at the time of the attack. “We were away for a while, on a short vacation. This morning we received a call from our son that there was a cow with strange injuries in the barn. A little later a second cow was seen, also with injuries on her back,” says Gorte.
The vet has examined the injuries and advised BIJ12 to be called in. This is the agency that takes care of, among other things, the settlement of wolf damage for provinces. DNA has since been taken. An investigation will have to determine definitively whether it was indeed a wolf attack.
The cows are doing well under the circumstances. “They do have some ‘stripes’ on the back, but luckily they are doing fine,” says Gorte.
