Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw won gold at the European Championships. The Ukrainian Danyil Boldyrev won the men’s category. German climbers were not represented in the final.
In a purely Polish duel, Aleksandra Miroslaw prevailed against Aleksandra Kalucha (7.085 seconds) in the women’s speed climbing final at the European Championships on Monday (15.08.2022) in 6.922 seconds.
And it was a curious finale: Miroslaw, 28, set a new world record this year with 6.64 seconds and beat it himself three weeks later (6.53 seconds). Miroslaw was favored against Kalucha – and almost stumbled. At the beginning of the final she made a technical mistake, Kalucha gained a lead, then she made a mistake too and Miroslaw overtook her.
Two athletes from Poland had previously contested the small final. Here Natalia Kalucka won in 7.197 seconds against Patrycja Chudziak (7.459 seconds). Silver and bronze went to the Kalucha sisters.
Favorite Boldyrev takes gold
Ukraine’s Danyil Boldyrev, 30, won the men’s gold. In his fifth European Championship final he needed only 5.586 seconds, competitor Marcin Dzienski from Poland (6.245 seconds) was beaten.
The Frenchman Guillaume Moro had previously won the small final against the Spaniard Erik Noya Cardona (5.658 seconds) with a time of 5.551 seconds.
Brockfeld best Germans
The active members of the German Alpine Club (DAV) had nothing to do with awarding the medals. So they are still waiting there for the first podium finish in the 30-year history of the European Speed Championship.
Five athletes from Germany were still in the round of 16: Sebastian Lucke, Leander Carmanns, Anna Apel, Julia Koch and Nuria Brockfeld. Of them, only Nuria Brockfeld qualified for the quarterfinals. There Brockfeld was eliminated against the eventual finalist Aleksandra Kalucka. Dorian Zedler and Linus Bader were already eliminated in the qualification.
The EM competitions for sport climbers at the multisport event will end on Wednesday and Thursday with the competitions in the combination format “Bouldering and Lead”. Medals will also be awarded in this discipline at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
