Blue-green algae found in the inner port of Ostend: activities in and on the water temporarily banned
Due to the warm weather, the waterways are currently optimal for blue-green algae blooms. After an inspection by the Flemish Environment Agency, blue-green algae were found in the inner port of Ostend. Exposure to blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) by ingestion through the mouth, skin or inhalation poses health risks such as diarrhea and vomiting, irritation of the eyes, ears and skin and headaches, respiratory complaints, allergic reactions and asthma.
Capture and recreation ban
There is therefore a temporary capping ban, so pumping up water is not allowed. Fishing, sailing with sup, kayak, canoe, … and other recreational activities are also temporarily prohibited. The competent authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
