At least 11 people were killed in Russian shelling in the Dnipropetrovsk region on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. This is reported by the Ukrainian governor of the region, according to news agency Reuters. The shelling took place several tens of kilometers from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, across the Dnipro River.
Earlier, the governor reported via Telegram that 21 people had been killed. Eleven people are said to have died in the Nikopol district and ten people are said to have died in Marhanets, about 30 kilometers away.
Later, the governor adjusted this death toll to eleven. He does not clarify how many people have died in which place. Earlier, the governor spoke of several dozen injured, but whether that number is still correct is also unclear.
The governor nevertheless speaks of a “tragic night”. The Russian army is said to have fired dozens of rockets into residential areas. According to the governor, several buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
Shelling was near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
The shelling took place near Enerhodar, a town across the Dnipro, where the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located. That nuclear power plant was repeatedly shelled last weekend and sustained damage. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
There are serious concerns at the international level about the safety of the nuclear power plant. At the moment, it appears that the critical infrastructure is intact, but new shelling could seriously jeopardize safety.
At the request of Russia, the UN Security Council has therefore decided to discuss the situation in Zaporizhzhia on Thursday afternoon.
