Giovanni van Bronckhorst has qualified for the play-offs of the Champions League with Rangers FC on Tuesday. The Dutch coach saw his team win the return against Union Saint-Gilloise 3-0, after the first leg in Belgium was lost 2-0.
James Tavernier gave Rangers the lead from a penalty just before half-time. The ball hit the spot after a handball from Union defender Siebe Van der Heyden.
After an hour of play, Antonio Colak doubled the margin. The Croat headed from a rebound from close range after goalkeeper Anthony Moris failed to control a shot from Scott Arfield.
To avoid extra time, Rangers had to score one more time, which happened eleven minutes before the end. Malik Tillman headed in from close range after a long cross from Borna Barisic. In the injury time, Jean Thierry Lazare Amani was shown red at Union, where Bart Nieuwkoop had a basic place.
Rangers will play in the play-offs against the winner of the diptych between PSV and AS Monaco. The two teams are currently in extra time. The winner of the play-off qualifies for the group stage of the Champions League.
Van Bronckhorst reached the final of the Europa League with Rangers last season. Eintracht Frankfurt was too strong after penalties.
