Simo Lipsanen is the holder of the Finnish record and is part of the European Championship team. Arto Bryggare looks back at the result.

Simo Lipsanen won the sixth consecutive Finnish triple jump championship at the Kaleva Games. Gold is a great achievement, but Iltalehti’s expert Arto Bryggare pay attention to the result.

Lipsanen, who holds the Finnish record, only jumped 16.24 meters in his last. It was the only 16-meter crossing of the competition.

The series was 15.75, 15.85, 15.86, 15.86 and overstepped.

– I am worried about his situation. The conditions were not bad. The man has jumped more than 17 meters, a meter further than in the Kaleva Games. He is by no means in that shape now.

In the fifth and sixth rounds, Lipsanen seemed to be left with bronze, while the Turku Sports Federation Topias Koukkula Missed it. The SE man said with a bit of tongue in cheek that he only got fired up for the competition at the last attempt.

– It can’t be like that. American sprinters have shown too many times that the arrogant become the retriever, Bryggare wonders.

Lipsanen jumped his Finnish record of 17.14 in 2017. Since then, the leaper, who is considered a super talent, has never gotten over 17 meters.

In January, there was a promising 16.71 meter in the hall. In March, Lipsanen injured his ankle in the last race of the indoor season.

He only competed outdoors for the first time at the end of June and missed the World Championships. Before the final of the Kaleva Games, Bryggare estimated that if Lipsanen has used the training time correctly, jumping will pass.

This was not the case in Joensuu.

– I am most worried about how the run will go. It doesn’t work. Running is the basic thing in the triple jump. In contacts, the jump must continue, i.e. go forward hard. The attitude must be strict. It was soft.

– When Lipsanen pulled himself together in the last lap, every contact was better. He can jump. The power was tripled, the initial result was 16.20.

Believe in success through trial

Lipsanen got a place at the European Championships in Munich, because he is ranked 13th. The collection of ranking points already started last season.

In this season’s European results list, the ranking is 48th. The number one is 17.95 skids Pedro Pichardo.

– The ranking system is still taking shape. It would be desirable if the athletes who went to the games had shown their fitness, says Bryggare.

Before the Kaleva Games, Bryggare believed that Lipsanen would not go to Munich if the results were only around 16 meters. Now the defector from Lappeenranta’s Urheilu-Miest plans to get on the racing machine.

– At the European Championships, 16.50 meters takes at least the final. 17 meters is not necessarily enough for a medal.

Lipsanen jumped 16.82 at his best last season. Bryggare fears that the master will not be able to reverse his course again.

– I don’t think he will be able to fix the downhill. I hope so, but the change would have been reflected in a better result level at the Kaleva Games. In athletics, realism is dull. The race didn’t make any promises about EC success.

The European Championships in Munich start on August 15.
