P&C Düsseldorf opens first German branch of Magasin du Nord

Last year, the Düsseldorf-based clothing retailer Peek & Cloppenburg KG took over the well-known Danish retail chain Magasin du Nord. The brand is now about to make its debut in Germany: On March 31, the first Magasin-du-Nord store in Germany will open on Königsplatz in Kassel, Peek & Cloppenburg announced on Wednesday.

According to the parent company, Magasin du Nord will use a total of 3,000 square meters on three floors in the center of the Hessian city. “The curated range includes clothing for leisure and business as well as evening wear from popular brands, hip, young labels and well-known international designers,” said P&C.

Stephan Fanderl, who is responsible for corporate development and sales on the management board of the Peek & Cloppenburg Group in Düsseldorf, explained the background to the planned reopening: “In Kassel we have a very attractive location for our first Magasin-du-Nord Store found in Germany. We would like to use the top location in the city center for ourselves,” he said in a statement. “Due to the pandemic, the retail market is currently very agile. This created the need for a new multi-brand fashion store in Kassel. With our fashion expertise from the group of companies, we would like to take this opportunity to present the Magasin du Nord brand to our customers in Germany.”

The Düsseldorf group took over the Danish retailer last year

Most recently, the premises that Magasin du Nord will occupy housed a Peek & Cloppenburg branch, which was operated by the Hamburg-based retailer of the same name. The Düsseldorf-based mother of Magasin du Nord is a different, independent company.

The two independent groups, which bear the name Peek & Cloppenburg, have existed since 1911. The Hamburg-based company has branches mainly in northern Germany and is therefore also known as P&C Nord. Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf (P&C West), on the other hand, operates its stores mainly in western and southern Germany. In the new federal states, the two competing retailers are present in different regions.

Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf completed the takeover of Magasin du Nord last year. The retail chain, which is best known for its magnificent flagship in the center of Copenhagen, had previously belonged to the British group Debenhams for years. Magasin du Nord was not directly affected by the insolvency of the traditional retailer, whose department stores have since been completely liquidated, because the chain had retained its independence under the Debenhams umbrella.
