The Israeli army carries out air strikes on several targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday. A spokesman for the Palestinian health ministry says at least seven people have been killed and several dozen people injured.
Israel has confirmed the airstrikes and says more attacks may follow. The army spoke in a statement of a “special situation on Israeli territory”.
The rocket attacks follow days of unrest over the arrest of Palestinian leader Bassam Al Saadi. He would lead a jihadist group.
The Palestinian health ministry said at least seven people were killed, including a five-year-old girl. Another 44 people are said to have been injured. A senior commander of the jihadists was killed in the air strikes, the group itself confirmed.
Israel claims 15 dead. Jihadists, among others, have been killed.
A state of emergency has been declared in the West Bank area. The Israeli army had already sealed off the area while hunting members of the jihadist group.
Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The Palestinians see the area as part of their future statehood. Israel considers the West Bank to be of religious importance to its residents.
Unrest in the West Bank flares up further
Last month, Israeli soldiers already carried out numerous raids on the West Bank. They were thus responding to attacks that would have been committed in part by Palestinians from that region. Nineteen Israelis were killed in those attacks.
In May, the Palestinian-American Al Jazeerajournalist Shireen Abu Akleh shot dead as she covered the unrest around the city of Jenin. According to the United Nations, an Israeli soldier fired the deadly bullet.
