Marin Pongracic apparently still has a chance at VfL Wolfsburg. The 24-year-old central defender was loaned to Borussia Dortmund last season and had sued the “Wolves” for bonus payments and publicly criticized them during this time. The club management actually wanted to sell the five-time Croatian international this summer, but the new coach Niko Kovac emphasized again on Thursday: “Everyone gets a chance, everyone gets a chance. And of course that applies to Marin as well.”
At a press conference before the DFB Cup game at regional league club FC Carl Zeiss Jena (Saturday, 6 p.m. / Sky), the former national coach of Croatia admitted: “I know everything that happened. I also know what people say about him. Only I believe that he is an extraordinarily good person, that he has a big heart and that he deserves every chance I have.” Kovac also praised Pongracic’s sporting potential: “It’s up to him if he does it all brings the place, how he imagines it and how we imagine it. But I know what he can do. And when he pulls off what he’s able to pull off, he’s helping this team.”
According to Kovac, a final talk about the future of the former youth player from Bayern Munich, among others, is planned for next week. Pongracic is not currently training with the team in Wolfsburg. “Marin still has some catching up to do. He was ill and came to us later through the national team,” said Kovac.
