BRUSSELS/BERLIN (Dow Jones) – According to the ideas of Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck, some EU countries should save more than the agreed 15 percent on gas consumption. On the fringes of the meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels, Habeck said that the agreement on a savings target of 15 percent sent a clear signal to Russia. “Europe cannot be divided.”
Exceptions were made for island states that are not connected to the European gas network. Therefore, the reduction of 45 billion cubic meters of gas originally targeted by the European Commission will probably not be achieved, but the gas quantities saved would not have been available to the other countries either.
But the savings target of 15 percent does not have to remain in other countries. In some EU countries, “and I would say the same for Germany, we should try to get better,” says Habeck. Of course, this would depend on winter temperatures and individual savings. But a lot has happened so far, according to Habeck.
