Top galloper Torquator Tasso just missed out on a German horse’s third win in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Ridden by jockey Rene Piechulek at Ascot Royal Racecourse, the five-year-old stallion was only beaten by Pyledriver with Patrick McDonald in the saddle and took a respectable second place.
Mishriff and jockey James Doyle finished third after 2406 m in the test worth the equivalent of more than 1.4 million euros.
Torquator Tasso sensationally won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris last year. After a weak start, he recently won the Hansa Prize in Hamburg this year.
Torquator Tasso, trained by Marcel Weiß in Mülheim/Ruhr, is now scheduled to compete in the Baden Grand Prix (September 4th) before wanting to repeat his success in the Arc at the beginning of October.
The only German winners in the history of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes are Danedream (2012) and Novellist (2013).
