Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s top scorer Patrik Schick elegantly said in an interview with the “Rheinische Post“Questions about a possible, medium-term change of club avoided. “I can’t tell you what the future holds for me. Maybe next season won’t be as good as the last one and Leverkusen want to sell me as soon as possible,” said the Czech international.
The 26-year-old has just extended his contract with the Bundesliga club by two years until June 30, 2027. “I always wanted to stay in Leverkusen,” said Schick. During the talks, sporting director Simon Rolfes made it clear to him what ambitions Leverkusen had as a club and how the team should develop. “I like that we’re playing in the Champions League next season. That was of course important for my decision. In addition, I simply feel good in the team and in the club. So there was no reason to change anything.”
Schick, who had scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga last season, had occasionally been discussed at FC Bayern as the successor to world footballer Robert Lewandowski (33), who had meanwhile switched to FC Barcelona. “I didn’t give a thought to going somewhere else. Of course there is always interest from other clubs. From my point of view, however, it was clear: I was convinced from the start that I would play for Bayer Leverkusen again next season,” he said.
Rolfes emphasized before Schick’s extension: “No one needs to report”
Bayer’s sports director Simon Rolfes had given all potential applicants in the “image” a clear rejection even before Schick’s extension. “Nobody needs to get in touch with us because of Patrik. It is normal for a top striker in his class to arouse desire. But: He will also play with us next season, that’s very clear.”
Leverkusen bought the 1.91 meter tall attacker from AS Roma in 2020 for 26.5 million euros, making it the second most expensive transfer in the club’s history. In his professional career, Schick has already been paid 76 million euros in transfers. Since his transfer, he has increased his market value from EUR 25 million to EUR 40 million, making him one of the 20 most valuable footballers in the Bundesliga.
