“It was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced,” Clarke said.
Clarke suffered two brain aneurysms while working on Game of Thrones. He was diagnosed with the first bulge in 2011. The bulge burst and he had a cerebral infarction. In 2013, the bulge was found a second time and Clarke had to undergo surgery.

– It’s amazing that I can even speak and live my life quite normally without any special consequences. I’m in the very small minority who survive this, Clarke rejoices in an interview with the BBC
– If you have such a seizure, cerebral blood flow stops for a while and basically that part of your brain is out of use after that. The blood will find another route to circulate in the brain, but this bloodless part will always be unusable, he continues.
Clarke has since founded SameYou, a charity for brain injury victims.
Fortunately, Clarke’s memory has not been affected by the cerebral artery bulging. This is why he is still able to work as an actor.
– I can appear every night in a two and a half hour show and not forget a word. I’ve always had a good memory, Clarke concludes.
