Anouk Vetter failed to win gold in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The 29-year-old Dutchman lost her lead in the final 800 meters and had to settle for silver.
Vetter started the 800 meters at the Hayward Field Stadium with a margin of about one and a half seconds on the Belgian number two Nafissatou Thiam and that turned out not to be enough. The native of Amsterdam clocked 2:20.09, while Thiam was more than seven seconds faster (2.13.00) and thus became world champion for the second time in her career. The bronze went to the American Anna Hall.
With silver, Vetter can still look back on an excellent tournament, in which she improved her personal best in the long jump and shot put. She finished with a total score of 6,867: a huge improvement on her own Dutch record of 6,693.
Vetter’s silver is the third medal of the Dutch team at the World Cup, which will last until Sunday. For the athlete herself, it is her second World Cup medal, after bronze in 2017 in London. In 2016 Vetter made her breakthrough with the European title and last year she won Olympic silver in Tokyo. There too, it was gold for 27-year-old Thiam.
