high jump (M)

The high jump competition in Eugene is more open than ever. A total of 14 jumpers, including the two German participants Tobias Potye and European Champion Mateusz Przybylko, have already cracked the 2.30 m this year and can flirt with the final – at least. The two Tokyo Olympic champions Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar and the Italian Gianmarco Tamberi did not jump any higher in the open air. The outstanding jumper this season is the South Korean Woo Sanghyeok, who is aiming for his first major title in Oregon. The spoilsport could be the American Shelby McEwen. 2.30 m are also called for to ensure a safe entry into the final.

Hammer throw (M)

That’s it for Tristan Schwandke! At 71.02 m, the third attempt is his weakest. As he is currently tenth, he will most likely have to watch tomorrow’s final battle as a spectator.

Hammer throw (M)

At the third attempt, the American Daniel Haugh qualified directly for the final with 79.34 m – and even throws further than favorite Wojciech Nowicki.

18:33

Hammer throw (M)

Tristan Schwandke sends a loud “Jaaaa” after his second attempt – and 72.87 m is actually a small increase. With tenth place in the A group so far, a place in the final would be utopian.

18:26

Hammer throw (M)

Target throwing in the battle for places: Both Briton Nick Miller and American Daniel Haugh reach a distance of 77.13 m. This should be enough for both of them for the final. Tristan Schwandke has not gotten that far in his career so far.

18:22

Hammer throw (M)

Tristan Schwandke drifts sideways on his first attempt at the World Championship. However, the 30-year-old still manages to make a valid attempt. With a distance of 71.94 m, the second in the DM still has to improve on his other shots. The Olympic silver medalist Elvind Henriksen immediately bought his ticket for tomorrow’s final with 78.12 m.

18:15

Hammer throw (M)

Olympic champion Nowicki is the first athlete to break the required distance of 77.50 m for the final. At 79.22 m, the Pole can already pack his bag for today. The hammers of the other athletes have landed between 72 and 75 meters in the first attempt so far. Tristan Schwandke will soon be part of the A group. The B group will then follow at 7:30 p.m.

Hammer throw (M)

For the past decade, the men’s hammer throw has been dominated by Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki, most recently Olympic champion in Tokyo, and Pawel Fajdek, winner of the past four World Championships. This duel is looming in Oregon again. Nowicki goes into the ring as a slight favorite, who threw a meter further in 2022. Tokyo fourth-placed Michailo Kochan from Ukraine, Olympic silver medalist Eivind Henriksen from Norway and French runner-up Quentin Bigot could also take part in the medal fight. The German representative Tristan Schwandke only jumped on the World Cup train after being nominated at the last second and is considered a blatant outsider even in the prelims.

Three decisions are made on the first day of the competition. The women walkers (from 10.10 p.m.) with Saskia Feige and the walkers (from 0.10 a.m.) with Christopher Linke will start in their competitions over the 20 km. At the end there are also medals in the track and field oval in the final over the 4×400 m in mixed. In addition, there are a number of heats and qualifications – mostly with German participation.

One looks in vain for Russians and Belarusians in the start lists after the invasion of the Ukraine. The world association World Athletics (WA) has banned all athletes, coaches and officials from Russia and Belarus from all events under its auspices “for the foreseeable future” because of the attack on Ukraine. The Russian Federation (RusAF) has been suspended since 2015 because of the doping scandal. Even as neutral athletes, Russian and Belarusian athletes are not allowed to start at the World Cup.

Host USA wants to turn the World Cup into a festival with dozens of stars. It doesn’t matter whether it’s shot put world record holder Ryan Crouser, sprinters Noah Lyles and Christian Coleman or hurdle stars Sydney McLaughlin and Devon Allen – the US team will provide a spectacle at the completely renovated Hayward Field.

Due to the cancellations of javelin throwers Johannes Vetter and Christin Hussong, heptathlete Carolin Schäfer and walker Jonathan Hilbert alone, the German team in Oregon is missing four possible medal aspirants. The biggest hopes are Malaika Mihambo, Olympic champion in the long jump, and Kristin Pudenz, second in the Olympic Games with the discus. The walkers around Christopher Linke, pole vaulter Bo Kanda Lita Baehre or the German javelin champion Julian Weber could also provide a positive surprise.

While there were often complaints about the heat at the last World Cup in 2019 in Doha, it will be hot again in Eugene, but the humidity will not be nearly as high as in the capital of Qatar. The German athletes had prepared for the competitions at a training camp in Santa Barbara, California, over the past few days. After cancellations due to injury and illness, 78 German athletes were last scheduled for Oregon. In order to be able to prepare specifically for the home European Championships in Munich from August 15th to 21st, the majority of the athletes will fly back to Germany directly after the respective competition.

The competitions were originally planned for last year, but due to the corona pandemic and the postponement of the Olympic Games to 2021, the World Athletics Championships were also postponed by a year.

The fact that the World Cup landed in Eugene – with 170,000 inhabitants by far the smallest venue in the history of the World Cup since 1983 – still occupies the investigators today. Eugene is the founding place of the world’s most powerful sporting goods manufacturer – Nike. The mega company is said to have been partly responsible for the fact that the World Cup was surprisingly awarded to Oregon in spring 2015. Surprising because the title fights were not even advertised by the world association, which was then called the IAAF.

The spectacle with the best track and field athletes in the world begins in just under 30 minutes. The competitions at Eugene’s Hayward Fields are the first track and field championships to be held on US soil. The stadium was built at a cost of around $200 million and is located on the University of Oregon campus. For the World Cup, the seating capacity was increased from 12,650 to 30,000 spectators with additional grandstands.
