Another South American asset to Emmen

The herd of vicuñas in Wildlands has taken on a new face. The camelids made their appearance at the zoo last year and now a vicuña foal has been born for the first time. That happened before the eyes of the public in the Serenga part of the animal park.

Vicunas are found in the wild only in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, western Bolivia, northwestern Argentina and northern Chile. Two young vicuña mares with one stallion have been living in Wildlands since 2021. It is not yet known whether the newborn is a stallion or a mare.

During the delivery, the other vicuñas and rhea were close by, but they all kept their distance. The delivery went well and the young was standing on his or her long legs within an hour of birth. Some visitors were able to follow the entire birth.
