Niemeier and Maria win German championship titles

The Wimbledon surprises Jule Niemeier and Tatjana Maria have won the German championship title with their Bundesliga club TC Bredeney.

A 4:5 defeat against TK Blau-Weiss Aachen was enough for the club from Essen to successfully defend their title. The 22-year-old Niemeier lost her singles against Serbian Aleksandra Krunic 3:6, 4:6.

Maria, twelve years her senior, was not used in singles and doubles, but supported her teammates around top seeded Laura Siegemund and signed plenty of autographs. Bredeney had been unbeaten so far this season and was able to afford the narrow defeat against the pursuers from Aachen.

Four days earlier, Dortmund’s Niemeier had narrowly lost the German duel in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Maria was then eliminated in the semi-finals. Both received champagne and flowers before the game started. For Maria and Niemeier it was the best Grand Slam result of their careers.
