Hertha’s new president Kay Bernstein wants to have an open discussion about pyrotechnics. “In my opinion, however, we have to talk about how responsible handling of pyro can look like,” said the 41-year-old from BILD on Sunday.
When asked if he would allow Pyro at Hertha, Bernstein said no. “Pyro without heat, with the support of fire masters, in certain zones for it. How could that be incorporated into game day? I would like an open discussion about the feasibility under clearly discussed conditions,” said the ex-ultra.
There are always heated debates about pyrotechnics. Proponents see them as an atmospheric part of a visit to the stadium, critics cite health risks.
Bernstein also commented on criticism and insults from Hoffenheim’s patron Dietmar Hopp and the controversial club RB Leipzig in the stadium. There should be freedom of expression, he said. “Dietmar Hopp in the crosshairs is not a free expression of opinion. Criticism yes, insults no.”

For him, the label of the ex-ultra is “both a blessing and a curse,” said Bernstein. “It’s a burden on this subculture to be the first from these ranks to be in such a responsible position in a club.” He is not so naive as to believe that this stamp will disappear.
Bernstein: “But I would like to revise it in terms of content by doing a good job and being able to show successes. I hope to be able to eliminate fears, doubts and reservations.”
