Appointment of members of the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism | news item

The Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of the members of the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism. In April, Dr Joyce Sylvester was already appointed as chairman of this committee. With the appointment of the other members, the state committee is now complete. The State Commission will investigate discrimination and racism in the Netherlands. Based on the investigation, the State Commission will advise the government on improving policies and regulations to combat discrimination and racism.

Broad knowledge and expertise

The members of the State Commission are:

  • Prof. dr. Dr PLH (Peer) Scheepers
  • Mr EF (Errol) Stoové
  • Prof. dr. Dr AB (Ashley) Terlouw
  • Prof. dr. Dr P. (Patrizia) Zanoni

The fields of expertise of the members include public administration, legal science, AI, cultural anthropology, method of sociological research, implementation of policy and regulation by executive organizations, sociology of law and organizational psychology. These areas of expertise had been determined in advance as necessary knowledge for the State Commission to be able to carry out the stated assignment. Within these fields, the members have focused on issues of discrimination, equal opportunities, the position of minorities, diversity, equal treatment legislation and/or ethnic profiling.

The State Commission has an interdisciplinary, scientific profile. She will focus on extensive, long-term research into fundamental issues in order to provide new scientific insights. In this respect, the State Commission differs from the National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism (NCDR) and the Human Rights Board. The committee will issue a final recommendation within four years and has the option of issuing interim reports.
