Today a time capsule is buried in the Kolksluis of Spaarndam containing memories of the Spaarndam residents themselves for their future fellow villagers. It was a great opportunity to do this as the lock is full of sand due to renovations.
The Kolksluis is the oldest working lock in Europe and the quay walls were so weakened that they had to be renewed. Since October last year, the lock has not been filled with water, but with sand.
Huge opportunity
The quay walls have to be replaced once every hundred years and in order to give the future residents of the picturesque village an image of life today, the Spaarndammers have buried a time capsule with photos, drawings and stories of famous villagers. The initiative comes from the Rijnland water board.
“It is a wonderful initiative to bring to the future what is happening in the present”, says Jaques Hendriks of the village council. “But the other way around, it’s also exciting how people look at this time.”

Students from two primary schools were allowed to do their work in the capsule today and help with the burial. “My class, 8th grade, took pictures of what it looks like now,” says Lucy. “For example, what the construction site looks like now and the school.”
End in sight
The work on the quay walls is almost finished. Soon all the sand will be removed from the lock and next month water will flow through again and boats can sail through it again.
