Bulgaria U21 international
Werder Bremen has extended the contract with homegrown Ilia Gruev. The 22-year-old midfielder, who has been playing for the green-whites since 2015, extended his working paper, which originally expired in 2023, on Sunday. As usual, the newcomer did not provide any information about the term.
“We are very happy that we were able to sign Ilia, another player who was trained in our academy, with the pros. He’s been part of the professional squad for some time and just took an important step in his development last year. We see a lot of potential in him and are sure that his development is not over yet,” said Clemens Fritz, head of scouting and professional football, about the Bulgarian U21 international.

Gruev made his Bundesliga debut for Werder in January 2021 and was part of the extended permanent staff for the first time last season. In 26 games in the 2nd Bundesliga, he contributed to the successful performance of the traditional club and is said to have recently aroused the interest of Ajax Amsterdam, among others.

“I’ve proudly worn the green and white Werder jersey for eight years now. And I like to carry it on. After very good talks with those responsible at this special club, I decided with conviction to extend my contract early. I thank the club for the trust and the wonderful fans for the great support,” he added.
