Biathlon World Federation introduces rule changes for the new season

Status: 21.06.2022 4:06 p.m

The world biathlon association has introduced some rule changes ahead of the start of the new season.

Accordingly, the results at world championships are no longer included in the overall World Cup ranking. The World Cup points distributed so far will no longer apply with the start of the 2022/2023 season, as the IBU announced on Tuesday after the meeting of the executive board announced in Salzburg.

No more scratch results

In addition, starting next winter, there will be no more void results, so that all races will be taken into account in the battle for the Big Crystal Globe. To do this, the overall and discipline scoring systems will be adjusted to increase the gap between top finishes and ensure that athletes missing races due to illness still have a chance to win the Crystal Globes.

Change in prize money

In addition, the prize money in the World Cup and IBU Cup is to be adjusted in such a way that the group of recipients will be expanded in the first phase until 2024. In a second phase from 2024 to 2026, the payments for the best ski hunters are to be increased.

Meanwhile, IBU Secretary General Niklas Carlsson is resigning from his post, but will support the IBU until the end of September. In addition, former German biathlete Daniel Boehm has been appointed IBU Sport and Events Director, effective immediately. “Daniel has done a great job as a sports manager and it feels natural to appoint him to one of the most important positions in the organization”said Carlsson according to the announcement.
