The US refusal to issue a visa to Russian cosmonaut Nikolai Chub calls into question the safety of his stay on the International Space Station (ISS) during a flight scheduled for spring 2023. This was stated to journalists in Roskosmos, reports TASS.

“The situation that has arisen calls into question the very safety of the Russian cosmonaut’s stay on the ISS and the safety of the American segment of the station due to the unpreparedness of the Russian cosmonaut in the event of an emergency,” the state corporation said.

Roskosmos stressed that they would not send an untrained crew into space, so the cosmonaut would probably have to adjust the training schedule. Even if the issue of a visa for Chub is resolved promptly, his training program will still have to be revised.

The astronaut needs a US visa to take part in the first five-week session to get acquainted with the American segment of the ISS, the state corporation explained. Without lectures and practical exercises on the layout of the American segment, which will be held within its framework, as well as acquaintance with the operation of its systems, understanding the interaction between the systems of the American and Russian segments and a course on actions in an emergency, space flight is “in principle impossible,” according to ” Roskosmos.
