After his great qualifying on Saturday, which allowed him to start on the front row of the grid for the first time in the last decade and at 40 years old, Fernando dreamed of a podium finish at Giles Villeneuve, but he has suffered a host of problems in the race, including a engine failure that has revealed afterwards.
This situation led him to be fighting until the last meters with the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas, which he has managed to keep at bay with a zig zag movement on the straight that the stewards have decided to investigate. After calling a member of Alpine and Fernando himself, the FIA stewards have decided to sanction the two-time world champion with five seconds, which leaves him in the final ninth place.
Despite this, the Spaniard retains tenth place in the general classification of drivers, ahead of Pierre Gasly, although still far from Ocon, who has 39 points and escaped in his particular fight.
The statement issued by the FIA refers to an infraction of article 2 b) of chapter IV of Appendix L of the International Sporting Regulations, and Alonso adds a sanction point to his license: “The stewards listened to the driver of car 14 (Fernando Alonso), the driver of car 77 (Valtteri Bottas) and team representatives, examined the video and telemetry evidence of car 77. Between turns 10 and 12, in the penultimate lap of the race, car 14 made repeated changes of direction to defend against car 77, which had to lift at one point and briefly lost momentum, although they noted the driver’s argument that at no time was car 77 alongside to car 14, the stewards consider this to be a clear infringement of said regulations, therefore the stewards impose a 5 second penalty in line with that imposed for a similar incident at Australia 2022. .Competitors are reminded that have the right to appeal certain decisions of the stewards, in accordance with article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Regulations, within or the applicable deadlines”.
