Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann won the bronze medal at the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome due to their Swiss opponents’ bad luck with injuries.

The Hamburg women benefited from Joana Heidrich’s end on Sunday. The 30-year-old collapsed screaming in the second set after her own serve, held her right arm and had to be treated. An initial diagnosis revealed a shoulder dislocation. Müller and Tillmann helped take care of Heidrich.

At the time of the demolition, they were trailing 0:1 sets and 7:10 points against Heidrich and her partner Anouk Vergé-Dépré. After the Olympic bronze medalists gave up, the game and the medal went to the German duo. “These are very mixed feelings, our thoughts are with Joana and Anouk,” said Tillmann.

Sport Director: Surprised us all

Müller and Tillmann have only been together for a year and a half. “We saw the huge potential, but the fact that they were able to access it so quickly surprised us all,” said DVV sports director Niclas Hildebrand.

At the tournament in Rome, the Hamburg bronze duo was the bright spot in an overall disappointing German team. Among others, Karla Borger and Julia Sude (Düsseldorf), who came third in the European Championship, were eliminated in the round of 16.
