Geraint Thomas has won the Tour of Switzerland. The Briton finished second in the final time trial on Sunday behind Remco Evenepoel and that was enough to drive Sergio Higuita out of the leader’s jersey.
Higuita started the flat 25.6 kilometer time trial in Vaduz with a two-second lead over Thomas, underlining his status as a strong time trialist. The INEOS rider clocked 28.29 and made up for no less than one minute and fourteen seconds against the Colombian.
Thomas was three seconds short for a double. Evenepoel recorded 28.26 and ended a difficult week with a convincing time trial. In addition to Thomas, the Belgian also left behind European champion Stefan Küng (28.37) among others.
Dylan van Baarle had the fastest time for a long time with 29.31, but when the favorites came into action, he dropped into the daily classification. The INEOS rider finished in tenth place as the best Dutchman.
In the general classification, Van Baarle was also the best Dutchman. The South Hollander finished in 55th place with a gap of almost one and a half hours on Thomas.
After the Critérium du Dauphiné, which was won by Primoz Roglic, the Tour de Suisse was the most important preparation race for the Tour de France. The Tour de France starts on July 1 with a time trial in Copenhagen.
