Twenty-five dead in Bangladesh monsoon rains | News

At least 25 people have been killed in monsoon rains in Bangladesh. More than 4 million people are blocked due to flooding. This was announced by the police on Saturday.

The large amount of precipitation is accompanied by lightning strikes that have claimed the lives of 21 people since Friday. At least three victims were children between the ages of twelve and fourteen. Four others were killed by landslides.

Much of the northeast of the country is under water. Soldiers have been deployed to evacuate residents who are isolated.

Schools have been set up as emergency shelters to accommodate the residents of villages that were flooded within a few hours. Flights at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet have been suspended for at least three days as water threatens to reach the runway.

Last month, the country was also shocked by flooding caused by pre-monsoon rains, which damaged crops, but also houses and roads.

Floods regularly threaten millions of residents in low-lying Bangladesh. According to experts, climate change makes them more common, more serious and can appear out of nowhere.
According to calculations by “The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)” of the United Nations, about 17% of the inhabitants of Bangladesh would have to move in the next ten years because of the consequences of the climate crisis.
