The main criticism that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk receives on the presentation of the quiz The Connection is that he reduces himself to a very interchangeable role. The idea behind this is that not everyone can present a program like De Wereld Draait Door, but that every casual passer-by at the Media Park could take a quiz.

Matthijs reacts sportingly to the criticism. “Everything could be better. I have to tell you honestly: I just got back from Paris, I haven’t seen a single episode, not even finished, because I was done and then we had to record Chansons, so I hardly know what this is about. But if something can be done better, then something can be done better. Why not?”
In any case, it’s good, he says. “Yes, I really like it. Of course I’ve been doing that pop quiz for twenty years, that’s also a quiz and this one is a bit bigger. I think it’s a very funny quiz, I think it’s a smart quiz that has everything to do with each other and I do it with great pleasure. I’m having fun with it.”
